Will a Mountain West player impress?
The Senior Bowl is the big All-Star event for prospective NFL players and there are a trio of Mountain West players taking part in the event in Mobile, Alabama.
As was with the Shrine Game, the things to look for this week are what goes on at practices through the week which are conducted by NFL staffs, plus the team meetings are another thing to take a look at to see who is interested in who.
The three Mountain West players participating are tight end Josh Oliver of San Jose State, Utah State tight end Dax Raymond and Wyoming defensive end Carl Granderson.
Being at the Senior Bowl means those players will very likely be drafted
Here are some details and early scouting reports of each Mountain West player.
Josh Oliver, San Jose State, TE
His physical profile is intriguing, where he stands at 6-foot-5 and 255 pounds. Oliver is one of the more well-rounded tight end prospects in this group, as he showcases the athleticism to be effective in a variety of ways.
Dane Bugler ranks the former Spartan at No. 9 overall at the position.
Oliver is an intriguing prospect from a height/weight/speed perspective — he’ll likely tip the Mobile scales around 6-foot-5, 255 pounds. With tremendous length and WR-like ability to attack the football, Oliver will function as a big slot for most NFL teams recruiting his services.
Dax Raymond, Utah State, TE
After watching his film, the decision to forgo his senior season made sense. At 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Raymond has great hands and can extend outside his frame or through coverage to secure the ball. He’s adept at working down the middle of the field, showcase a smooth mover and exploiting soft spots in coverage.
He projects to be flexed out at the next level, where he can win as a receiver. An area that I’d like to see some refinement is his technique as a blocker.
Ranked 10th among all tight ends.
An older prospect due to a religious mission he is an athletic pass catcher with sweet feet and body control to slip defenders in coverage.
Raymond has a good shot to be my top-ranked player at the position in Mobile; he and Tommy Sweeney were really tight in my most recent positional rankings. The ex-QB convert could improve with his blocking technique, but he projects as a flex TE at the next level anyway.
Carl Granderson, Wyoming, Defensive End:
Granderson is a long and lean edge defender that projects favorably to a 3-4 outside linebacker role in the NFL. He has good length and hand usage but his lack of flexibility does limit his pass rushing upside in the NFL.
