Oregon State and Wyoming both started the season off at home against Big West competition. The Beavers beat UC Riverside 72-59 while the Cowboys fell to UCSB 76-66. Wyoming traveled to Gill Coliseum last season and defeated the Beavers 75-66.
The Cowboys frontcourt is banged up to start the season. Junior 6’10” forward Jordan Naughton has struggled with back problems but is currently out with an LCL injury. Redshirt freshman 6’10” forward Hunter Thompson had a nice start to the first game but was knocked out of the game with a concussion and will miss the game in Oregon.
The Cowboys leading scorer in the first game was Justin James who finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. He will also be the tallest player on the court for Wyoming against the Beavers, sophomore forward Austin Mueller is listed as Wyoming’s only forward in the starting lineup and is an inch shorter than James. For even more perspective on the size disparity, Oregon State has 5 players on their roster listed at 6’10” or taller and 4 of them played in their first game. Wyoming will not have a player over 6’9″ available in Corvallis.
For Oregon State, they are led by 6’8″ junior forward Tres Tinkle. The coach’s son led the team with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists in their win over UC Riverside. While the Beavers had 3 other starters score in double digits, they only scored 4 points off the bench.
OSU head coach Wayne Tinkle is in his 5th year with the school. After starting his tenure 36-27 during his first 2 seasons, the Beavers clunked to a 5-27 season in 2016-17 before rebounding to 16-16 last season.
