The 2021 Mountain West football title game is Utah State traveling down to Carson, California, to take on the San Diego State Aztecs. A win means a berth to the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl, and maybe, just maybe, an Aztecs win can get them into a New Year’s Six bowl game if Cincinnati does not win the American.

As for the game itself, Vegas Insider had the game open up as a 4.5-point favorite for San Diego state but now it has swelled to six. This makes sense as San Diego State is ranked in the top 20 of the latest polls and for as good as Utah State has been this year there have been some inconsistent games.

They had a slow start vs. New Mexico State before pulling away, only beat Colorado State by two points, and were inexplicably throttled by Wyoming. That leads to some questions for the Aggies in how close this game will be.

However, there is a quarterback question with the Aztecs as Lucas Johnson left the game and had a brace on his right knee, but Jordan Brookshire came in reserver and played extremely well. There is no word yet about who will start on Saturday afternoon.

This game will be a test of strengths as Utah State has the best receiver in the conference in Deven Thompkins and the third-best passing offense in the Mountain West. The Aztecs pass defense is full of playmakers and leads the league interceptions and allow the fewest yards per pass attempt.

That is just one area to watch in this game as well as the ground game of Greg Bell against the Utah State rush defense which is near the bottom in yards per play at 4.46; San Diego State is second in yards per rush at 4.32 per play.

If you are looking at a betting angle and how to take at this current line it will be a bit tricky. Both teams have been just above .500 but the Aggies could be the best bet as they have a winning record away from home and as an underdog.

This game shouldn’t be a blowout as the Wyoming game against Utah State seemed to be a one-off situation. Going off trends one might want to take the Aggies to cover the six points.
