Former WAC foes are set to square off in the Arizona Bowl. Who will win the battle of the Aggies?

Of the six Mountain West teams that are going to bowl games, it was Utah State (6-6) that was sweating it out during bowl selections. Since there were more bowl eligible teams than slots available, there was a chance that Utah State would be left out of the festivities. But after a nerve-wracking Saturday, it was announced that USU would, in fact, be heading to the Arizona Bowl to take on New Mexico State (6-6).

MWC vs. Sun Belt

This will be the 38th all time meeting between these two teams. Before moving to the Mountain West and Sun Belt, respectively, Utah State and New Mexico State played each other as members of the Big West and the WAC.

New Mexico State is making its first bowl appearance in 57 years. The last time they were in a bowl game was the 1960 Sun Bowl when they faced off against… Utah State. The New Mexico State Aggies ended up winning the game, 20-13. This game, as of now, remains the only bowl game matchup between these two teams.

Utah State, meanwhile, is back in a bowl game after missing out last year due to a 3-9 record. With a win in this game, USU can end with a winning record for the first time since the 2014 season, when they ended 10-4. If New Mexico State wins, it will be their first winning record since 2002, when they went 7-5.
