Wyoming’s strong 4-0 start to the season came to an abrupt end in Wednesday’s Cayman Classic, as the Cowboys were pounded 78-53 by 12th-ranked Cincinnati.

Wyoming, operating without team leader and top shooter Justin James, started cold from the field and never closed the Cincinnati lead within 18 points. James missed the game after suffering an injury in Tuesday’s semifinal victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. He took a shot to the facial area and had to receive stitches and did not return to game action.

Cincinnati forward Gary Clark, who scored the Bearcats’ first 13 points, led CU with 17 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Kyle Washington added 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Hayden Dalton led the struggling Wyoming offense with 15 points off 4-11 shooting from the field. Alan Herndon and Louis Adams both finished in double figures with 12 points apiece. As a team, the Cowboys converted just 15 of 48 field goal attempts and turned the ball over 14 times.

Wyoming is now 4-1 on the season and will return home to Laramie to take on New Mexico Highlands on Sunday.
