Wyoming football will play their first game since Nov. 5, a 24-34 loss to rival Colorado State. The next two games, against Air Force and Utah State, were scrapped due to COVID-19 safety precautions. The Cowboys, coming out of the extra long off week, will look to get their season back on track against the winless UNLV Rebels.

Here are three ways that Wyoming can beat UNLV.

1. Contain the run

UNLV has been dismal on offense this season, with one of the worst scoring offenses in the country they haven’t seen much success in moving the ball through the air. While they haven’t seen much success passing the ball in the early weeks of the season running back Charles Williams has been a source of consistency. He has averaged 80.8 yards per game, which is good enough to make him the fourth leading rusher in the league. If the Cowboys find a way to contain him, and force UNLV to throw, they should see positive results.

2. Pressure the quarterback

The Cowboys have a young defensive line this season, this is a result of players either leaving or opting out for health reasons, and while the line may be young, they have shown that they are able to cause disruption in the backfield. UNLV has yet to find an offensive rhythm, they are throwing just 178 yards per game, and the offensive line is a young one. Wyoming needs to capitalize on UNLV’s inability to formulate an effective passing attack by getting into the backfield and cause rushed throws. The Cowboy defense has done a pretty good job getting to the quarterback this season, they will need to do just that if they are to win.

3. Minimize mistakes

In the Cowboys last game against Colorado State numerous big plays called back due to penalties, these momentum killing penalties were one of the reasons that the bronze boot changed ownership this season. If the Cowboys are to win in Las Vegas, then they need to play smart football, costly, drive-killing, flags will not work if they want to win.

Prediction

Wyoming is coming off two weeks of rest, they haven’t played since losing to their most heated rival, and they are playing a team that they beat 53-17 last year in Laramie, none of these things promise a Wyoming victory, but I think that they can be used as forecasters. I predict that Wyoming will have found more consistency on offense in the weeks since they last played, and their defense will be able to hold UNLV out of the end zone for much of the game. These things will result in a typical Wyoming run attack that eats up clock, while the defense forces the Rebels out of their comfort zone and makes them throw more than they would. In the end I think the pokes secure their second win of the season.
