Wyoming football is off to one of its hottest starts in recent memory. With a hard-hitting defense and newfound offensive firepower, the pokes have put up at least 45 points in consecutive weeks for the first time since 2016. Wyoming’s success in all areas of the game has catapulted them to a 3-0 start to the season, they will be looking to make that 4-0 this Saturday when they travel to Hartford, CT, to play the 0-4 UConn Huskies.
Wyoming is looking to stay undefeated for the season, if they keep executing on offense, and continue to swarm the ball on defense they should get there. Here are three things to keep an eye on this Saturday as the Cowboys take on the Huskies.
1. A Tale of Two Teams
Before the start of the season, Wyoming was ranked as one of college football’s most stable programs. With returning players and coaches the pokes had a sense of familiarity that has helped them immensely this young season, the same cannot be said about the UConn Huskies.
UConn comes into the game with interim head coach Lou Spanos. Spanos took over the program following the resignation of former head coach Randy Edsall earlier this season. In addition to the coaching drama plaguing the program, UConn is set to start 14 freshman Saturday, with only nine upperclassmen on the initial depth chart.
Wyoming plays as a team, it is one if their greatest strengths and Saturday’s game will be an excellent litmus test for how much familiarity and teamwork go into a win.
2. UConn Woes
As mentioned earlier, the 2021 football season is not off to a great start for the Huskies. Coaching instability, coupled with an inexperienced roster, has led the team to be one of college football’s worst.
UConn ranks 124 in total defense, and 129 in total offense (this is out of 130 FBS teams). The Huskies have been outscored 184-49, other than their week two matchup against FCS opponent Holy Cross, they haven’t been in any close games this season.
3. Defense Keeps Rolling
Last week saw the Wyoming defense bounce back from a couple of tough games to open the season, they looked like the defense poke fans have grown accustomed to seeing during the Bohl era.
Wyoming had to rely on the offense, and flawless two minute drills, to win in weeks one and two, but last week the defense reared its head and reestablished itself and the Wyoming brand of football that has become a hallmark of this team.
The Cowboy defense finished the game with six sacks, two pick-sixes, and seven TFL, Chad Muma led the charge with 10 tackles and a pick-six. The defense was able to hold Ball State to just two scores, while the Wyoming offense rattled off 31 points of their own to add to the two interceptions for touchdowns, allowing the pokes to win 45-12 in their most complete game of the season.
The UConn game will be a good opportunity for Wyoming’s defense to stay on a roll, and continue to build their confidence. They have all the pieces to be an elite defense, this weeks game should give them the opportunity to work things out before entering conference play against Air Force.
Final Thoughts
It’s hard to make a definitive proclamation in football, anything can happen any given Saturday, but it’s hard not to look at last weeks Ball State game and see the blueprint for success this week. Wyoming was dominant in all aspects of the game, defense, offense, and special teams were all in the Cowboys favor. Going up against a team that has nothing left to lose can sometimes be a recipe for upset, but I think that the pokes execute their game plan like they did last week and bury the Huskies in a deluge of well coached football in all aspects of the game.
