ALL-TIME RECORD: (Updated 1/29/21) SDSU leads the all-time series against Wyoming 45-41. The Aztecs have a 29-11 home record against the Cowboys. San Diego State has won the last 13 meetings in San Diego and eight of their last nine encounters.
ODDS: San Diego State -16.5
San Diego State looks for its sixth straight win in the head-to-head series over Wyoming. In its last five wins against the Cowboys, San Diego State has won by an average of 21 points. Wyoming’s last win in the series came on Dec. 27, 2017, an 82-69 victory.
The Aztecs are looking to their seniors this year. Matt Mitchell, Jordan Schakel, Nathan Mensah, Terrell Gomez and Trey Pulliam have amassed 69 percent of all Aztecs points this season, although that figure dropped to 48 percent over the last five matches.
Marcus Williams on the Cowboys has scored 31.4 percent of the 70 3-pointers he’s attempted and has made 9 of 28 over the last five games. He’s also converted 72.6 percent on free throws this season.
In last Sunday’s 93-88 Cowboys win over the Wolf Pack, Williams put up 28 points with three assists and one rebound, while Graham Ike had 18 points with six rebounds and one assist. Both Kwane Marble and Xavier DuSell chipped in 13 points apiece in that match against Nevada.
Nonetheless, Wyoming is 0-5 when scoring fewer than 70 points and 10-1 when scoring at least 70.
San Diego State has won its last four home games, scoring an average of 74.8 points while giving up 62.3. San Diego State elite defense has held opponents to 60.4 points per game, the 10th-lowest mark in Division I. Wyoming has given up an average of 76.1 points through 16 games (ranking the Cowboys 248th).
For game two in the Wyoming- SDSU Series, look for the Aztecs to dominate again, but Wyoming will be more focused, coming in with greater determination to perform at a higher level, along with a re-calibrated game plan. The Aztecs, however, could have dominated Thursday’s game by an additional ten-plus points had they not played the end of the bench in the second half.
Saturday’s contest will be more about whether the Aztecs can execute a fourth-straight 30-point win, than if Wyoming will split the series.
GAME TWO PREDICTION
Aztecs 87, Cowboys 55
