Can Craig Bohl’s Cowboys finally beat the Spartans?
After the last six quarters of Wyoming football, it seems that the Cowboys have found a recipe for success on offense. After inserting freshman Sean Chambers into the lineup against Utah State, the running game instantly improved and better passing situations soon followed.
In Wyoming’s first trip to Fort Collins since the Rams opened Canvas Stadium, Chambers continued his run to the top of the quarterback depth chart. The Cowboys finished with 277 rushing yards and an easy win over Colorado State. As the sole owner of the top spot, Wyoming will continue to find situations to open up the offense against San Jose State.
As much as the Spartans have struggled since joining the Mountain West, they are 3-0 against Wyoming during that span. San Jose State is coming off a dominant 50-37 thrashing of UNLV and while they are only 1-7 this season, they are far from a pushover this season.
Be Ready to Play
The weather in Laramie looks like it’s going to be ugly, the opponent isn’t a draw for the fanbase, and the game starts at noon. Current projections for kickoff are mid-30’s and wind. While most of the players have played in that weather before, it is rarely fun to spend an extended time in and can be challenging to keep your mind fully engaged.
The weather will also impact the crowd size so it could be one of the quietest atmospheres they will play in this year. Add in the early kickoff that they rarely get and there are a lot of reasons why they could come out flat. The Pokes need this game in the worst way and it should be easy to tell if they are ready to play from the start.
Run, Chambers, Run!
This is an obvious key but the ground game needs to be dominant. The weather won’t be generous to the passing game and the Cowboys haven’t been able to pass under ideal circumstance. If the Cowboys struggle to establish the run, San Jose State will have a chance to stick around in this game.
Leave Your Mark
The defense is finally playing with an offense that can score points. The result was a commanding win over Colorado State. The Rams offense was pressured to keep up with the Pokes and the defense was able to force some turnovers. Wyoming’s defense has a lot of players who have a legacy to leave and if they continue this dominant streak and somehow sneak back to 6-6 on the season, their place among the greatest to play at Wyoming will be solidified.
