Vander Waal favorite to win QB spot

Quarterback Competition

The two question marks facing Wyoming as they entered the 2018 season were quarterback and offensive line. With Josh Allen electing to declare for the NFL Draft, redshirt freshman Tyler Vander Waal and senior Nick Smith have been competing for that coveted position. Vander Waal was ahead in the competition as the team departed spring camp.

Now two weeks away from the season opener at New Mexico State, Vander Waal is still in the lead. “I think right now Tyler (Vander Waal) is continuing to do good things,” said Wyoming coach Craig Bohl.  “We’re really pleased with Nick (Smith), as well. Both of them have pushed one another to get better. I would say right now that Tyler has the upper hand.”

Offensive Line Update

The Cowboys offensive line was hit hard by injuries in 2017 and 2018 has started in a similar way.

After the Potato Bowl, the Cowboys thought they had a good idea of LT, RG, RT for the upcoming season. Wallace was a returning senior and Jackson was a returning senior who started until an MCL injury ended his season late in the year while Velasquez was a solid starter throughout the year.

There have been many Cowboys out with injuries that have led to players being moved around the line. Cryder slid over to LG to fill in for the injured Abojei and Rush. Abojei has been out for most of camp from the result of a concussion he sustained in an earlier practice, Rush suffered a season-ending bicep injury.

Stofer who finished camp as the 2nd string LT has moved to the right side. The projected starter, Velasquez, has a knee injury that will likely keep him out of the NMSU game.
