Week 6 AP College Basketball Rankings: Nevada Drop To No. 7

A down Mountain West will hurt Nevada’s ranking.

Can the Wolf Pack crack the top five?

The Nevada Wolf Pack are one of nine teams undefeated teams left in college basketball after six weeks and are the fourth highest rated team with zero losses in the latest AP top 25. Duke, Tennessee, and Gonzaga are all ranked above the Wolf Pack which dropped a spot from six to seven due to the Volunteers upsetting then-No. 1 Bulldogs.

Being jumped by Tennessee is not an issue at all as is Gonzaga remaining above Nevada is fine — whoever gave the Bulldogs a first-place vote is not paying attention — but cracking the top five might be a hurdle the Wolf Pack might have a tough time achieving based on its own victories.

Nevada did beat Arizona State which was ranked 20th on Friday night, and still is after that loss, but that is the best team that Wolf Pack will play from now until Selection Sunday, and beyond if Nevada wins a few NCAA Tournament games.

That is a long about way of saying that the Mountain West is not good and is why the most likely way that the Wolf Pack can climb into the top five is to blow out opponents which is something that Nevada is not really doing or have teams above them lose.

There is a ton of basketball left and perhaps Fresno State and Utah State are for real with new head coaches, and San Diego State seems likely to get things on track at some point this year to be a good team — just see last year’s run.
