Boise State and Utah State are ranked
The final College Football Playoff polls before championship Saturday and the real intrigue within the Mountain West and the Group of five is just a formality.
UCF will be the highest ranked team and then it will be some combination with Boise State and Utah State. The Broncos looked better by easily dispatching of New Mexico, whereas the Aggies were taken to the limit against Colorado State. Perhaps that outcome will flip-flop those teams.
Fresno State has a case to be made but they are on the outside looking this week, as expected. However, the Bulldogs are still in the thick of this race for a New Year’s Six game if they win the conference and UCF slips up.
Utah State moved up two spots to No. 21 with Boise State also moving up a pair of spots to 23rd.

In reality, these rankings mean literally nothing for the Mountain West and Group of Five teams. It is nice to move up in the polls a few spots and clearly, it is better than losing because a loss would eliminate teams. That is what makes the Utah State at Boise State game so intriguing because the winner will move up a few spots and that could be huge if No. 9 UCF does not take care of business in its rivalry game against South Florida.
The only reason these rankings will matter and make things interesting is if the Knights lose and how far they drop to the winner between Utah State and Boise State. The gap is 11 and 13 spots each between the AAC leader and the two Mountain West teams.
It will be interesting to see how the gap is closed if UCF loses. Plus, what would be going in the Mountain West’s favor is that the title game could feature two ranked teams, whereas the Knights would be playing a team that is not ranked and has nine wins, at most.
A UCF loss will make things very exciting heading intot championship week.
