Quick learning curve this week.
The 2020 season is pretty much going as bad as possible for Utah State. Head coach Gary Andersen was let go, the team is 0-4, and over the weekend starting quarterback Jason Shelley was released from the team for a violation of team rules from interim head coach Frank Maile.
The Aggies are moving forward and playing Wyoming on the road this Thursday night and will go with freshman Cooper Legas. Legas is a former three-star recruit from Orem, Utah, and threw for 9,770 yards, ran for 2,770 yards and accounted for 124 touchdowns, and led Orem to back-to-back state championships.
“Cooper is a winner, man,” Maile said. “He is a competitor, and we are looking forward to his leadership and competitiveness leading the Aggies to a W. He’s a competitor and so that’s one of the main reasons why we recruited Cooper in the first place is he was a champion in three different sports. So not only did he lead his football team as a team captain to a championship in high school. He was a wrestling state champion, and he was a javelin thrower champion.”
Going up against a really good Wyoming defense while making his first career start and also on a short week is not likely to lead to a successful first start for Legas. This is a real tough situation for him to be in to make his college debut.
Not only is Legas starting vs. Wyoming due to Shelley no longer on the team but backup QB Andrew Peasley is out with COVID-19.
“He will not,” stated Maile. “He tested positive last week so he will not play in this game.”
Legas will have quite the learning experience when he travels to Laramie for his first career college football start.
