McEwen has two years of eligibility remaining

Former Utah State guard Koby McEwen has requested and has been granted his release from the university.

McEwen, a former four-star recruit, averaged 15.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game this past season. The 2017 Mountain West Freshman of the Year expects to receive plenty of interest from power conference schools this spring.

The news comes at a tough time for the Utah State program which expects to press the reset button after firing Tim Duryea earlier this month. The program opted to hire former South Dakota head coach Craig Smith to succeed Duryea.

Last July, Duryea accused AAU coaches of “shopping” McEwen to other programs. Deseret News ran the initial story about Duryea voicing his concerns on the issue.

McEwen joins fellow backcourt member DeAngelo Isby as former Aggies. Isby announced via his Twitter page Friday that he had also received his release from the university.
