Utah State’s David Yost is Mountain West Wire’s Coordinator of the Year

The high-flying Aggies took Mountain West football by storm, making Yost an easy choice as our staff’s pick for coordinator of the year.

Speed kills.

– Offensive player of the year | Defensive player of the year
– Coach of the year | Freshman of the year
– Special teams player of the year | Newcomer of the year

After an uneven year of results in his first year at the helm last fall, the Utah State Aggies offense exploded out of the gate in 2018 and rarely let up, putting on a high-octane show and daring the rest of the Mountain West to keep up.

Naturally, that emergence made Aggies offensive coordinator David Yost an easy call as our pick for the conference’s coordinator of the year.

On a per-play basis, Yost’s offense averaged 6.86 YPP, a figure surpassed only by 2014 Colorado State and 2010 San Diego State in the last decade of Mountain West football. He utilized tempo to get breakout performances all over the place, from quarterback Jordan Love to running back Darwin Thompson, and score 47.2 points per game, the third-best scoring offense in the FBS.

Others receiving votes: Andy Avalos, Boise State; Kalen DeBoer, Fresno State; Zak Hill, Boise State
