Three Keys to a Colorado State Win
Run, Run, Run
Colorado State has to establish the run early in this game. The Rams offensive line, which has struggled all year at the point of attack, must dig deep and have the best game of the year in order to open up holes for Izzy Matthews and Marcus McElroy.
Running the ball will be key for another reason, snow and freezing temperatures are expected for the game. Slinging the ball around Sonny Lubick Field may not be an option.
Keep The Ball
Utah State is fourth in the [jwplayer ek141AW0-sNi3MVSU]country in interceptions and seventh in the country in turnover margin (+12). If it’s Collin Hill or K.J. Carta-Samuels under center, they have to make high percentage throws and if it’s close, put it in a place where only a Rams receiver can catch the ball.
Third Down Is The Only Down
Utah State is one of the best in the country at shutting down their opponents on third down. Colorado State has to get into a third and short situations to open the playbook up a little.
The Rams are not too bad at getting off the field on third down themselves. This is a lot easier if John Jancek’s bunch can find a way to put the breaks on Utah State’s high powered offense on first down. Putting the Aggies in third and long more than half of the time gives the Rams a heck of chance at pulling off the upset of the year in the Mountain West.
