What is your best bet?
With spring games played and betting odds updated, there are a few standouts on the futures odds boards at the best sports betting sites for the Mountain West.
It seems ridiculous to say that 500/1 is a standout number, but for the Mountain West, it is. The Utah State Aggies are listed at +500 to win the national title. These odds are as good or better than many of the Power 5 schools.
Teams with the same odds include Virginia, Kansas, Louisville, and Kentucky, and these odds are better than the likes of Ole Miss, Pitt, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Colorado, Oregon State, and many more.
Utah State
This one is interesting because Utah State is listed with a projected total of just 7.5 wins, yet as mentionoed above are +500 to make it into the College Football Playoffs and win it all. They won 11 games last season, but they lost pretty much their entire offensive line and five starting players on the defense.
So, will they be able to hit a 10 or 11-win season again under Gary Andersen?
They do have a pretty tough schedule, they open in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, against Wake Forest, then get a cake-walk game against Stoney Brook in Logan. Then they play at San Diego State, at LSU for a tough one, then at Air Force, and face Fresno State on the road.
The Aggies should win eight games, possibly nine but doubt they’ll break double-digits in wins.
Boise State
The Broncos open their season against the Florida State Seminoles in Jacksonville, Florida. That’s almost as difficult as going into SEC Country. Then they get a stretch of fairly easy home games, Marshall, Portland State, and Air Force but the Falcons have proven to be tough at times for the Broncos.
Their only legitimately tough road games after Week 1 are BYU and Utah State. The Broncos are likely to go 10-2. They have their entire offensive line returning and the bulk of their defense back as well.
Their two losses will come from their meetings with Florida State, BYU, and Utah State. It’s not that any of those games are not winnable; they just are not likely to win them all. BYU in Provo is always a tough affair, as is Utah State … and Florida State is … well … Florida State.
Fresno State
The Bulldogs are in a position where they have a lot of pieces on the offense to replace. They have a corps of strong running backs but there is a lot of work to be done. On top of that, the defense was also decimated. It will be tough for them to get another 12-2 season, even if there are high expectations to win another Mountain West title.
They have arguably the toughest season start in the conference, getting both USC and Minnesota right off the bat. Just being so early in the season, at least one of those games could result in a loss. But after these two games, they have a pretty easy schedule, with the exception of the Aggies on November 9th.
They do have to head to Colorado Springs to face Air Force. You might say so what? But the Falcons may be a little better this season than they were a year again. They are getting almost their entire offense back and eight starters on defense, so they may play with a bit more cohesion in 2019 taking teams to the edge. That said, we very well might see a 10 or 11 win season out of Fresno State.
