Marvin Menzies Runnin’ Rebels open the season against Loyola Marymount University (1-0) this Saturday night at 7 p.m. PT

Three Keys to a Rebel Victory

1. Dominate The Boards

UNLV won their exhibition against Montana State-Billings 83-81. One of the huge advantages the Rebels had was in the rebounding category. The Rebels has 50 total rebounds and 22 offensive rebounds leading to 32 second-chance points. UNLV starter Mbacke Diong is going to have his hands full with 7’3 Center Mattias Markusson of LMU, but the Frontcourt duo of Shakur Juiston and Mbacke Diong will have the physicality edge. Look for the Rebels to crash the offensive boards and get second-chance points in abundance against the lions.

2. Keep James Batemon in check

The Lions leading scorer from last season is returning. James Batemon averaged 17.8 points per game last season. Bate showed last season that he can score the ball. He had two 30 point games last season both on the road. Batemon is a talented guard who has the ability to shoot the three, and also has a knack for getting to the foul line. Senior Guard Noah Robotham will be tasked with guarding Batemon. A key to slowing Batemon down will be if Robotham can force him to give up the ball early and put constant pressure on him that may lead him to turning the ball over.

3. Make Free Throws

Last season the Rebels ranked in the top five in the nation in both free throw attempts but were only 212th in free throw percentage. In their exhibition game the Rebels went 11-18 from the free throw line. A huge factor in this game and throughout the season will be if the Rebels can convert on their free throw attempts.
