UNLV Tops San Diego State After Fourth Quarter Comeback

SDSU drops a close game

The visiting UNLV Rebels overcome an 11 point deficit in the fourth quarter to upset the 23-point favorite San Diego State Aztecs and win 27-24.

The Rebels entered the game 2-7, (0-5 MW) including losing their last six contests.  That had to do in large part because starting dual-threat quarterback Armani Rogers has been hurt.  Rogers didn’t play in this game and Aztec fans thought this was going to be an easy victory.  Especially since San Diego State returns their starting quarterback Christian Chapman, fullback Isaac Lessard and running back Juwan Washington.

UNLV got off to a 6-0 lead with two field goals after the first quarter.  One of their field goals came because Christian Chapman threw an interception and the Rebels got the ball around midfield.  The Aztecs took the lead going into halftime when quarterback Ryan Agnew who come on late in the first quarterback found wide receiver Tim Wilson Jr. in the endzone for a 14-13 lead.

In the third quarter, after a John Baron II 33 field goal and when Agnew found Wilson Jr. again for a touchdown the Aztecs were now up 24-13 going into the fourth quarter. UNLV really turned up their intensity in the final period. UNLV rallied back for 14 unanswered points starting with an 11-play, 75-yard drive that finished off with a Max Gilliam’s10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Brandon Pressley.

The Rebels then forced a punt and took over at their own 8-yard line. Four plays later, UNLV’s running back Lexington Thomas broke a bunch of tackles and finally found the end zone for a 75-yard touchdown run. This was the game-winner for the Rebels.

UNLV is 3-7, (1-5 MW) while the Aztecs are 7-3,(4-2 MW). UNLV plays Hawaii on the road next Saturday, while San Diego State heads to Fresno to play the Fresno State Bulldogs.
