Have the Rebels bowl chances take a hit with Rogers injury?
UNLV head coach Tony Sanchez announced during Monday’s press conference that starting quarterback Armani Rogers will be out indefinitely with a foot injury, specifically tearing his plantar plate in his right big toe. The injury occurred during the Arkansas State game two weeks ago.
The early estimates by the coach are that his starting quarterback will be out approximately for six weeks, and that could end his season.
Starting in Rogers’ absence against New Mexico this week and until he is healthy will be Max Gilliam. The sophomore out of Thousand Oaks, California, has thrown one pass for zero yards this year which was against the blowout win over UTEP.
Gilliam is a former four-star recruit who originally committed to Cal but transferred to play at Saddleback College in 2017 before enrolling at UNLV this past winter.
At Saddleback in 2017, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Gilliam passed for 1,185 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions, as well as 222 rushing yards (without adjusting for sacks) and two rushing scores.
Here is what Gilliam told Inside the Rebels when asked what his strengths are as a player.
“I would say my strengths are taking care of the ball. I feel like I do a good job minimizing turnovers as much as possible. I would say my athletic ability allows me to extend plays when I need to. I would say I m a pocket passer that has good athleticism. But I would prefer to pass the ball and give it to our athletes.”
His style of play is similar to what Rogers likes to do in that Gilliam has the ability to run to either extend plays or take off with the ball and be a threat with the ground game.
Here are highlights of Gilliam when he was at Saddlbeback junior college.
