Menzies era is over.
After just three years in Las Vegas, Marvin Menzies is out as the UNLV Rebels head coach, per an ESPN report.
In those three years, Menzies never made the NCAA Tournament, or any postseason for that matter, while winning just 43 games to 44 losses. There was hope after the 2017-18 season when Menzies went from 11 wins to 20, but this year the team did not get better and went only 17-13.
One possible reason he was let go was due to the lack of quality wins this past season. The Rebels beat up on the teams they were supposed to but they were not able to be the top half of the league. UNLV went 0-7 against teams the top four teams in the league which were Fresno State, San Diego State, Nevada and Utah State.
There are extremely high expectations in Las Vegas, fair or not, and Menzies was not anywhere close to reaching goals of what fans want. Getting to the NCAA Tournament basically every year and competing for conference titles seems to be the baseline goal for this basketball team.
There have been rumblings about Rick Pitino being connected to this job, but he shot that down.
Who knows the interest level Pitino would have but UNLV must have a plan in place, or a wish list, if they are firing Menzies after just three years.
