The UNLV Rebels are on a winning streak, since their season-opening defeat to Loyola Marymount (5-0). Considering Loyola’s hot start including a win against Georgetown. UNLV’s first loss of the season now looks like a quality loss to a good team. Coming off of their most recent win against Oakland (74-61) the Rebels looked like an imposing team on the defense side of the ball. Holding the Bears to just 28 first-half points.
Oakland finished the game shooting only 37.7 percent from the field. Shakur Juiston had his first game of the season in which he looked like the same player he was last season, the Senior had his first double-double of the season going for 18 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Another positive note for the Rebels is that three other players finished in double figures. Amauri Hardy was one of those players finishing with 12 points.
The backup guard is starting to get buzz that he should be a starter for coach Marvin Menzies. UNLV will have an advantage in size against Pacific who only has one player above six foot seven. Look for UNLV to control the boards on both ends and get to the free throw line. It will be interesting to see if Rebels can continue to improve on defense and win a third straight game by double figures.
The Pacific Tigers are coming into this game after a close win against Idaho State. Pacific is ranked 142 in the Kenpom rankings, that is three spots ahead of UNLV who are currently ranked at 145. The Tigers are led by Damon Stoudamire who is now in his third season at Pacific.
The Tigers finished fourth in the West Coast Conference last season and in the preseason were projected at sixth. Pacific’s only loss of the season came at the hands of UNLV’s in State rival Nevada. Nevada is ranked number 7th in the country and beat Pacific 83-61. The Tigers are lead by experience, with each of their top three scores being upperclassmen. Anthony Townes is the leading scorer at 14.3 points per game and is also tied with Jahlil Tripp as the team’s leading rebounder with 6.0 per game.
