The Boise State Broncos follow up a solid road victory over a tough Troy team last week.  This week the Broncos will return to the Blue Turf for their home opener against the UConn Huskies.

While the Huskies, on paper, may not seem to present a big challenge and the Broncos might have the biggest game of the season next week against Oklahoma State; Head Coach Bryan will likely have his squad dialed in and look to make another statement victory.

UConn Update

The UConn Huskies enter year two of a rebuild with head coach Randy Edsall.  The Huskies finished last season at 3-9 and do not figure to be considerably better this season.

The Huskies were soundly beaten last week at home to the #21 University of Central Florida. Jeff Sagarin has the University of Connecticut Huskies football programmed slotted as the 137th best college football team (Boise State checks in at 23 in Sagarin’s rankings).

Players to Watch

Brett Rypien, Boise State (Senior, Quarterback)

Rypien had a terrific game on the road last week against a good Troy squad.  This week at home against a struggling Connecticut squad, it will be up to Rypien to lead his squad to an efficient attack and a comfortable lead early in the second half to possibly allow some of the younger players to get some game experience.

Boise State Wide Receivers

With Cedric Wilson now on the Dallas Cowboys, many wondered who would step up to fill the void at wide receiver.  Last week it was the upperclassmen who led the way. Sean Modster racked up 167 yards with touchdowns and got help CT Thomas, AJ Richardson, Akilian Butler, and John Hightower.  Will the Bronco wide receivers have another big game and who will step up for the second game of the season?

Kahlil Shakur, Boise State (True Freshman, Wide Receiver)

Speaking up wide receivers that could step, Khalil Shakur should certainly be a Bronco to keep your eyes on.  The ultra-talented true freshman played at Troy and seems to be part of the Broncos present along with the future.  If there is a large lead in this game, it will present an opportunity for Shakur to display his talents.

Tyler Horton, Boise State (Senior, Cornerback)

The senior team captain ended up recovering two fumbles and returned both for touchdowns last week at Troy.  Horton will again be counted up to provide leadership and solid coverage for the Boise secondary.
