The Aztecs host its second game of the season, an unbracketed game of the Maui Invitational against Texas Southern. Both teams reached the NCAA Tournament last year and are looking to make the tournament once again.
The Aztecs won their first game last week against the Tigers’ fellow SWAC counterpart Arkansas-Pine Bluff by a score of 76-60. In the season-opening victory, the Aztecs were led by senior guard Devin Watson.
Watson was on fire from behind the three-point line as he connected on six field goals from deep en route to 20 points in the game. Sophomore Jalen McDaniels flirted with a double-double last game finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds. He also added five assists and three steals. Jeremy Hemsley (14 points) and Matt Mitchell (10 points) also contributed double-digit points.
Texas Southern comes into the game with a 1-2 record after a grueling first three games. The Tigers started the season on the right foot as they defeated Baylor 72-69 on the road in their season opener. They followed the victory over the Bears with a trip to Spokane, Washington to face #3 ranked Gonzaga. Gonzaga was a tough test, which the Tigers failed, as would most teams, with a 67-104 loss.
Texas Southern is led by a trio of experienced seniors. Senior Jalyn Patterson leads the Tigers in scoring after two games. The 6-1 guard leads the way with 18 points per game. Behind Patterson, 7-2 center Trayvon Reed is averaging a double-double with 14.5 points and 14 rebounds per game. He will be a problem for the Aztecs who have not rebounded the ball well at all this season. Finally, the third senior in double-digit scoring is Devocio Butler. Butler is a 6-5 wing who has been deadly from behind the three-point line early in the season (5-8 from deep) on his way to averaging 12.5 points per game.
