SJSU has a hefty task in trying to replace Seneca Knight.
San Jose State star Seneca Knight has opted-out for the rest of the season due to COVID-19 concerns.
Knight was an All-MW player last season and led the Spartans with 17.2 PPG last year, but has struggled in a small sample this season with 9.3 PPG on 24% from the field. The 2020-21 season has not gone as hoped for Jean Prioleau and staff, as they are 1-4 and haven’t defeated a Division I opponent this season. It’s also yet to be determined if Knight will return to SJSU next season or will pursue other options, but for now, he’s just opting out for this season.

What does this mean for the Spartans?
An already struggling team loses a talented player; there’s no other way to slice it. Although Knight had been in a major slump, he likely would’ve turned it around, but now Richard Washington, the leading scorer this season, will be taking an obscene amount of shots.
Washington can fill-it-up but now will have a ton of work on his plate without Knight helping. Now is a better time than ever to give 6’9 freshman Nate Lacewell some more playing time. Maybe some more run for Sebastian Mendoza also. Prioleau will need some of the freshmen to impact the game in a more significant way.
What’s next for SJSU without Knight?
What’s next is a series against Boise State for the Spartans. The Broncos are an immensely talented roster that will, without a doubt, pose issues for a struggling SJSU team. According to KenPom, the Spartans are predicted to lose every single conference game the rest of the way but have shown the ability to pull off shockers.
