For the first time this season, San Jose State will enter a game after winning last week against UNLV. While the Spartans can feel good about the win over Rebels, they will need to prepare to take on a very tough defense in Wyoming. The Spartans will need to achieve these 3 keys if they want to make it two wins in a row:
Come out ready to play on the road
With an 11 AM PST kickoff, the Spartans will need to be ready to go against a very physical defense. The Spartans body clocks will still be on west coast time but they will need to be amped up and ready to play in what will be the earliest kickoff for them all year.
Not to mention, at the beginning of the season slow starts hindered the Spartans and forced them to have to play catch up multiple times in the second half. If the Spartans want to win this week they will need to come out with a hot start and not allow Wyoming to control the game.
Win the turnover and field position battle
Last week in the win the Spartans were able to win the turnover battle 3 to 1. This week San Jose will again need to win the turnover battle to create extra offensive possessions as it is tough to score on this Wyoming defense. As Coach Brennan pointed during Monday’s press conference this will one of the best defenses that the Spartans will face this season.
In addition, not only will they need to win the turnover battle winning the field position battle will also make it more possible for the Spartans to come out on top. Having to consistently drive the length of the field against a defense that is ranked 44th in S&P+ will be tough. Creating some opportunities to score on a short field will be necessary for a win this week.
Control the QB run game
Coach Brennan has explained that QB Sean Chambers is more of a downhill runner rather than someone who will escape the pocket and scramble. In the win against Colorado State last week,
Chambers making his first start only completed 7 of 10 passes for 116 yards but he also carried the ball 22 times rushing for over 100 yards. If the Spartans want to win this week they will need to force Wyoming to open up the offense more than they would like to with a true freshman QB making his second start of his career.
