After beating Life Pacific College 89-72, an NAIA school in southern California, the Spartans lost at home to Southern Utah 59-66. San Jose used it’s size advantage against Life Pacific as they dominated the boards 47-19.
The Spartans were led by some new faces as Brae Ivey, a junior college transfer from Riverside College led all players in scoring with 18 points in his D1 debut. Michael Steadman, a junior college transfer from City College of San Francisco lead all rebounders with 13 and also had 15 points. In total 9 new players suited up for the Spartans.
San Jose State played a close game against Southern Utah as it was 31-31 at the half at the Event Center. Unfortunately, the Spartans shot only 35 percent from the floor and 29 percent from three. Again Michael Steadman led the Spartans in rebounds with 14 and added nine points to go along but ultimately it was not enough for the Spartans as they lost by seven.
San Jose is now headed to the Bahamas to play in the Junkano Jam tournament. The tournament includes Central Michigan, CSU Bakersfield, Air Force, South Dakota, High Point, UMBC, and Weber State, who San Jose plays on Thursday. UMBC (University, Maryland, Baltimore County) is the most popular team after crashing the tournament last March as a No.16 seed beating No.1 seeded Virginia.
Weber State comes in 1-1 as they lost at San Diego 66-83 and beat Bethesda 123-53. Cody John leads the Wildcats in scoring at 19.5 points per game while Dima Zdor leads the team in rebounds at 5.5 per game. Randy Rahe who is the school’s and Big Sky conferences all time leader in wins is in his 13th season at Weber State. Rahe has a career record of 248-138 and is 154-54 in Big Sky games with 5 Big Sky titles. Weber State comes in ranked No. 141 in the KenPom Rankings compared to San Jose State at 327.
