The Spartans were back at home last Saturday against cross-town rival Santa Clara. The Spartans outrebounded the Broncos 45-30 but shot only 38.1% from the field which would ultimately cost the Spartans the game as they lost 71-63. Michael Steadman had another great game, as he finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds which was his second double-double of the season. After the Spartans controlled back to back games and held late leads in the Junakoo Jam tournament the Broncos controlled last Saturday’s game in the second half as the Spartans were only able to get within 6 points of Santa Clara. Although a 1-5 record does not seem very good, there have been some small improvements from last years team to this years team as they have been in every game that they have played. Last week, Coach Prioleau spoke on this and also about how this team must find a way to finish out games while holding a lead.
This week the Spartans only game is against Indiana State which tips off at 7 tomorrow. The Spartans will have over a week until there next game. They Sycamores come in on a 3 game winning streak in which they have beaten Green Bay, Mckendree, and Western Kentucky. Their only loss was their season opener at Ball State. Indiana State is lead by Greg Lansing who is in his 9th season as head coach. He previously spent another 8 seasons at Indiana State as an assistant. He holds an overall 133-126 record with the Sycamores and this season they were picked to finish 8th out of the 10 team Missouri Valley Conference. Junior guard Jordan Barnes is the player to watch on the Sycamores as he was the lone Sycamore player to be picked on the Preseason All-Conference team. Barnes currently leads the team in points and assists per game at 20.3 and 3. He also holds the second highest offensive rating on the team, only behind Tyreke Key. Indiana State comes into Wednesday’s matchup ranked 145 in the KenPom Rankings.
