The October 13th game between San Jose State and Army West Point is going to be played at Levi’s Stadium. The game time is still to be determined but it will be televised on one of the ESPN networks.
While this may be the first time the Spartans are playing at Levi’s Stadium the ties between the San Francisco 49ers and Spartans run deep. In the past, the 49ers have used San Jose State facilities for practices and individual workouts. In addition, many former Spartans like Bill Walsh, Jeff Garcia, and Steve DeBerg went on to have great careers as 49ers.
Head coach Brent Brennan was really likes playing in a pro stadium.
“It’s going to be an awesome experience for our team. Any chance you get to play in an NFL venue like that, be in an NFL locker room, play on an NFL surface, it will be an incredible experience for our fans and our football team,” said San José State head coach Brent Brennan.
While I agree with coach that it will be a great experience and create some exposure for the program, my first thought was how empty the stadium will, unfortunately, look on game day.
The highest attendance the Spartans achieved last season was 18,483 against rival Fresno State. San Jose State’s lowest attendance was 10,667 against Cal Poly. Last season the Foster Farms Bowl was held at Levi’s Stadium and featured Arizona vs. Purdue and that totaled only 28,436 in attendance.
Levi’s capacity is 68,500 and for that bowl game, they only reached 41.5 percent of capacity. While I do believe there will be some Army fans in the stands, I think it is going to be quite an empty stadium on October 13th.
