Spartans punter Michael Carrizosa is the definition of a young man who turned his life around as he lost 30 lbs between his freshman and sophomore years and went on to achieve one of the best seasons by a Spartan at any position.
Carrizosa lettered in football and soccer at Palma High in Salinas, Calif., and matriculated to San Jose State as a justice studies major and a member of the Pi Kappa Pi fraternity.
In 2014, Carrizosa won the No. 1 punting role during the SJSU’s preseason camp. He averaged 37.1 yards per punt and had four punts of 50 or more yards, including a season-long 52 yarder at Utah State on November 21, 2014. He converted his first PAT after SJSU’s final touchdown in their 42-10 season-opening win against North Dakota on August 28, 2014. He was given the No. 1 place-kicking role for SJSU’s season-finale at SDSU on November 29, 2014, but missed a 21-yard field goal attempt.
In 2015, Carrizosa was named a Ray Guy Award finalist for the best punter in NCAA football, a Second Team All-America selection and a First Team All-Mountain West. He was also named the Special Teams Player of the Year at SJSU’s annual awards banquet.
In 2016, Carrizosa was named as a Honorable Mention All-Mountain West and onto the Ray Guy Award watch list. He averaged 44.3 yards per punt. He finished 14th nationally in punting average.
In 2017, Carrizosa became SJSU’s career leader in punting average with 43.3. He had seven career punts of 60 or more yards. He became the first Spartan punter to finish in the top 20 nationally in punting in multiple seasons (2015, 2016). He also set the SJSU single-season record for punting average with 47.5 mark. In addition, he became the first Spartan player to participate in the annual Walter Camp Football All-America weekend and second Spartan in history to be invited to the annual December College Football Awards Show.
Carrizosa is a star punter who’s going to the annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, which is for draft-eligible players. Don’t forget that each one of Carrizosa’s punts is for his late mother, Amy Rodriguez, who suffered from cervical cancer and passed away on April 4, 2016.
