San Jose State Athletics Must Pause On-Campus Contact Sports Through Dec. 21
Spartans may need to find a new home or be creative to finish football season.

Santa Clara County banning contact sports
San Jose State football can’t catch a break. First their biggest game, possibly ever, was canceled due to COVID-19 issues on Boise State’s side with too many players out.
Now, there is another concern for all of Spartans athletics as contact sports are not able to happen through a Santa Clara County order which is not allowing contact sports through Dec. 21.
This goes through the rest of the Mountain West football season, including the conference title game. San Jose State football in the preseason went about five hours away to Humboldt State to be able to practice to prep for the season, so they have been through this before.
The games left on the football schedule include two home games against Hawaii on Dec. 5 and a huge matchup vs. Nevada on Dec. 12. Those games will need to be moved to happen. New Mexico is already in Las Vegas practicing and playing its scheduled home games at Sam Boyd Stadium.
So, who knows where the Spartans will play their home games to finish the football season. Going to Reno for the finale is a possibility and feasible, but the game vs. Hawaii will likely still be on the mainland and there likely is some place in California for this game to happen.
As for basketball, the Spartans have three home games scheduled during this stretch against Pacific, University of Saint Katherine, and their game vs. Santa Clara. The Pacific game could be moved to their home court which is in Sacramento County, the Saint Katherine game has a high probability of being canceled, and as for Santa Clara game they are in the same county as San Jose State so that would have to be moved to a completely new place if played.
The Spartans begin Mountain West play with its first series in Logan, Utah, vs. Utah State on Dec. 21 and 23.
Obviously, this impacts other San Jose State sports including women’s basketball. The school was creative during football’s preseason camp and now the entire athletics program will have to make some changes to continue playing college sports over the next few weeks.
