Pope reportedly received over a thousand dollars from sports agency ASM
Yahoo Sports published a massive report Friday on the ongoing college basketball investigation.
As we pondered in Thursday’s article, the Mountain West is reportedly involved in the federal investigation for attempting to lure student-athletes to play for certain programs as amateurs.
The feds have seized thousands of documents involving former NBA agent Andy Miller of sports agency ASM, along with his former associate Christian Dawkins. The probe, which reportedly lasted several years, has discovered that Miller and Dawkins assisted in spending up to six figures illegally on these amateur athletes. Among them is current San Diego State senior forward Malik Pope.

According to the documents turned over to Yahoo Sports, Malik Pope received $1,400.00 from sports agency ASM. He is one of the handful of players on the ASM balance sheet that went on to play for a mid-major program. Former Wichita State guard Fred VanVleet received $1,070.00 from ASM, according to the reports.
Pope, tabbed as a five-star recruit by most recruiting databases out of high school, signed in November 2013 to play for San Diego State. Originally projected to be a one-and-done NBA prospect, Pope has stayed in San Diego throughout his collegiate career, and will be wrapping up his time with the Aztecs next month. Over 119 career games, Pope is averaging 8.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game. Many NBA Draft resources have projected Pope to potentially be selected in the second round of June’s draft.
Along with Pope, former or current stars including Michigan State’s Miles Bridges, Kentucky’s Kevin Knox, Washington’s Markelle Fultz, and Duke’s Wendell Carter also received money from the sports agency.
It is unknown at this time whether Pope will be ruled ineligible for the remainder of the season.
