San Diego State forward Malik Pope has been provisionally suspended due to his reported involvement in receiving improper benefits from ASM agents, multiple sources reported Friday.
Yahoo Sports published an extensive report Friday, listing current and former college basketball players that have received improper benefits from former ASM sports agents Andy Miller and Christian Dawkins. Pope was among them, allegedly receiving $1,400 in improper benefits according to the report.
The university announced later Friday that Pope will be suspended indefinitely until San Diego State’s internal investigation has been completed.
“This is something we’re not used to at San Diego State, obviously,” head coach Brian Dutcher said Friday afternoon regarding Pope’s situation. “We’re looking into Malik’s name on the (Yahoo report). I have great faith in the people of this university to do so thoroughly and efficiently,” Dutcher added.
Pope is the first player listed in Friday’s report to be suspended. The report also includes Michigan State’s Michael Bridges, Duke’s Wendell Carter, Alabama’s Collin Sexton, and others.
Pope, a senior, has appeared in all 26 games this season for the Aztecs. He’s averaging career-highs in points per game (12.7), rebounds per game (7.1) and blocks per game (1.2). Pope is a former five-star recruit.
Former UNLV guard Patrick McCaw was also listed in Yahoo’s report Friday.
