San Diego State looks to be bowl eligible this season while pining for more.
This post was a collaborative effort from three San Diego State contributors on Mountain West Wire. Ted McGovern predicted the non-conference opponents, Tyler Perches predicted Weeks 5-8, and Erwin Mendoza predicted Weeks 9-12.
Week 1: Stanford – Win
This will be the most formidable and potentially defining season opener in Aztecs football history. Rocky Long’s Aztecs travel to Stanford to face the David Shaw’s Cardinal football team. This will be the most important match for the Aztecs from a national rankings perspective. Everybody and I mean EVERYBODY has the Cardinal slated to win.
The Cardinal feature a possible NCAA top 5 offense which includes Heisman favorite Bryce Love. On the other hand, Cardinal defense is the worst it has been for decades. Aztecs offense is pretty good and much is expected of Juwan Washington; Aztecs defense is pretty great. Aztecs special teams is pretty special. It is a contrarian prediction: I predict the Aztecs will prevail with the win 24-20.
Week 2: Sacramento State – Win
This game will be a nice breather in between two epic Pac-12 matches. This will be a highly lopsided game. I predict it will end up 55-6. It might not be a shutout due to our third and fourth string likely receiving a lot of play time.
Week 3: Arizona State – Win
ASU is not the team the Aztecs faced last year. For starters, they have Aztec alum and former NFL coach Herman Edwards at the helm. And for the record, ladies, and gentlemen: Herm is for real. In addition, they poached our Aztecs Defensive coordinator, Danny Gonzales last year. So, while we boot up defense 2018, they will know the inner workings of defense 2017. I still give this win to the Aztecs, 35-27, but it will be hard fought.
