The Aztecs are going bowling for a ninth straight year.
Aztecs enthusiasts have understood that a bowl appearance was not guaranteed this year. Fortunately, SDSU was selected to play in a ninth-straight bowl game earlier today.
The Aztecs (7-5) were selected to play Ohio (8-4) of the Mid-American Conference in the 2018 DXL Frisco Bowl. Kickoff is set for Dec. 19 in Frisco, Texas.
The game will be televised at 5 p.m. PST / 8 p.m. EST on ESPN. This will be the first ever meeting between the teams.
When asked about the Frisco Bowl, Aztecs head coach Rocky Long replied, “Number one: we’re happy to be in a bowl. There was some question whether we we going to get to or not. Since we’re going to a bowl game, we’re excited about that.”
Long added, “We’ve played MAC teams before. We did this year, Eastern Michigan (winning 23-20 in overtime). We’ve played Northern Illinois in the past. We know how those go. They’re very close, hard-fought, physical football games. I assume this one is going to be just like that.”
The Mountain West searched for a bowl with an open spot in order for the Aztecs to be accommodated. SDSU was sixth on the Mountain West list after losing four of its last five games to close out the season.
Ohio finished tied for second place in the MAC’s East Division with a 6-2 record. This is the fourth straight bowl game for the Bobcats, who feature an offense that averaged 41.2 points and allowed 26.7 points a game this season. The Bobcats like to run the ball. They rushed for more than 3,000 yards this season.
This is the second straight year that SDSU will play a bowl game in the state of Texas. They lost to Army 42-35 in last year’s nail biter, the Armed Force Bowl, in Fort Worth.
SDSU’s roster includes 10 players and four coaches from Texas. True freshman tight end Nick McTear graduated from Heritage High in Frisco.
