The Aztecs return home for a game against their third Southwestern Athletic Conference opponent of the season, this time against the Jackson State Tigers. San Diego State looks to bounce back from a disappointing showing in Maui in the Maui Invitational. In Maui the Aztecs picked up a victory over Xavier, however, they were blown out in their two other games.
San Diego State is led in scoring by senior guard Devin Watson, who is averaging 15.6 points and 4.4 assists per game. Right behind Watson is NBA prospect Jaden McDaniels who is second on the team in scoring at 15.2 points and first in rebounding at 7.8 per game.
The Aztecs starting lineup has created the bulk of the offense as they account for 87% of the scoring. Starters Matt Mitchell (14 points per game) and Jeremy Hemsley (10.0) also are scoring in double digits. Fifth starter Jordan Schakel is slightly under the double-digit mark at 9.8 points per game.
Jackson State comes to Viejas Arena with a 1-5 record. This should be a tough year for the Tigers as they are expected to finish eighth in the SWAC. The Tigers have losses against Boise State and San Diego already this year and have one victory against lowly Chicago State. Junior Venjie Wallis leads the Tigers in scoring at 16.6 points per game, followed by Chris Howell who is averaging 10.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest.
San Diego State will need to use this game as an opportunity to get themselves back on track. After this game, they go on the road to face Illinois State, which is expected to finish second behind Final Four finalist Loyola Chicago. Then the Aztecs host San Diego and finish a tough three-game stretch by going to Berkeley to play California.
With a tough slate of games on the horizon, the Aztecs need to get themselves back on track after those big losses. This game should allow San Diego State the opportunity to work on all the things that went wrong.
