First league games are shelved
COVID-19 isn’t going away anytime soon, unfortunately. The college basketball season was always in jeopardy- as was and is for all sports- and just a few days there are already ramifications due to this once-in-a-generation pandemic.
The Colorado State and San Diego State series for December 3 and 5 has been postponed, due to positive cases for Colorado State.
Yes, it’s already happening, and it’s most likely going to be a reoccurring and extremely fluid situation for not just the Mountain West, but all teams in the NCAA.

Meanwhile, the Aztecs wasted no time and have already scheduled a pair of games for those dates. The soon-to-be Top 25 team will play St. Katherine and San Diego Christian on Dec. 2 and Dec. 4, respectively.
While these aren’t the kind of games the committee looks at come resume time, they are great tune-up games for the Aztecs, as they missed a lot of practice time due to COVID restrictions across the state.
Just for good measure, SDSU played San Diego Christian last year in a 92-48 walloping, and last played St. Katherine in 2013, winning by a close margin of 83 (tough game).
It might actually benefit the Aztecs-who should go 2-0 in these games. Coach Dutcher’s squad played 14 different players on Friday night in a 19-point victory over UC Irvine. With the limited practice and workouts due to the restrictions, Dutcher and his staff are still trying to figure out these rotations.
It’s an unfortunate situation for both teams- especially the Rams- and we all have to hope for a positive outcome and the health of all members involved. As the season progresses, this situation will be moving a lot, and schools will be calling here and there trying to fill in postponements.
Both programs are working with the Mountain West in an effort to reschedule these games, and the Conference had their hands full going forward. They already did a good job of adjusting the schedule and limiting travel as much as they possibly could, but the fact of the matter is that this won’t be avoided anytime soon.
All in all, the 2020-2021 NCAA basketball season will be a unique one, to say the least.
