Luck runs out for San Diego State
Nevada shut out San Diego State in the second half, to earn a comeback victory 28-24 over the Aztecs.
The Aztecs scored on their first two possessions of the first half, both were touchdown passes by quarterback Ryan Agnew. The first one was a two-yarder to running back Chase Jazmin and another a 16 yarder to tight end Kahale Warring. After the Wolf Pack got a safety and a 40-yard screen pass from Gangi to Taua for a touchdown it was now only a five-point game at the end of the first quarter.
Nevada took the lead early in the second quarter when quarterback Ty Gangi passed it to wide receiver Brandon- Leary Orange after bobbling it a couple times and a lot of missed tackles by SDSU found the end zone. Nevada took the lead 15-14. However, the Aztecs finshied off the half strong. The Aztecs regained the lead when senior kicked John Baron III kicked a 26 yard field goal. San Diego State increased their lead when Agnew found Warring again for a 30 yard score. At the half the Aztecs led 24 -15.
In the second half, Nevada came out hot and scored on the first drive of the second half which was capped off by a two-yard run by running by Toa Taua. Shortly Nevada took the lead on their next drive on a 32-yard field goal by Ramiz Ahmed.
San Diego State was struggling on offense. Their pass game which did pretty well in the first half was now getting stopped. The game came down to the Aztecs final drive. After punter Quinton Conaway had an amazing punt and the Nevada special teams downed at the 1 with about one minute left. The Aztecs drove the ball pretty well, in large part because of the Wolf Pack’s prevent defense.
San Diego State was on the 40-yard line with five seconds left. Agnew threw up one last past, and after a bunch of players going after the ball nobody could come up with the football and the horn sounded. Nevada had upset the Aztecs, 28-24.
Next week: Nevada (5-4, 3-2 MW) has their bye. San Diego State (6-2, 3-1 MW) continues on the road to play at New Mexico (3-5,1-3).
