It was only a matter of time that San Diego State could be losing coaches after three straight seasons of 10-plus wins. The Aztecs are losing defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales to Arizona State, first reported by Devils Digest.

Gonzales will still coach in the Armed Forces Bowl on Saturday against Army, and it is expected to be made official after the game.

“As of right now, from my knowledge he has been offered the job,” SDSU head coach Rocky Long said via the San Diego Union-Tribune. “His comment to me was, ‘We will talk about it after the game’s over.’

“He was intent on keeping it away and not make it a distraction to the game.”

Gonzales spent the past seven seasons coaching the defensive backs but 2017 was his first year as the defensive coordinator after Long filled the position within his staff last year.

While Long is a defensive minded coach, Gonzales is good in his own right and as a defensive backs coach his unit had 100 interceptions since 2011. That number is third most in the country and 14 of those were pick-sixes which was fifth in FBS.

Long expects to have a complete staff, including the new 10th assistant coach, when spring football begins in February.
