Who is going to buy Aztec Jordan Brand Gear?
The San Diego State basketball program is joining elite company as they are just one of eight teams be sponsored by the Jordan Brand — ya know, Michael Jordan.
The Aztecs join North Carolina, Michigan, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgetown, Marquette, and Houston as the teams to wear this Nike brand.
Looking at this group all have been to a Final Final Four with the exception of the Aztecs, so they are in great company and the only West Coast team to sport the Jumpan logo.
“We’re ecstatic,” said SDSU assistant athletic director Matt Soria via the San Diego Union-Tribune. “It’s the Jordan Brand trusting the direction of our program, understanding we play at a high level and continue to play at a high level. I think it shows the Jordan Brand sees San Diego State as a program it can market.
“They want to be associated with the best, and we want to be associated with the best. We’re now aligned with some of the better basketball programs in the country.”
Head coach Brian Dutcher has the right idea that this will help with recruiting.
“It’s the exclusivity of it, just to be a little different than everybody else. To have something that other schools in the conference don’t have access to, it’s kind of ups our brand and can help recruiting.”
Even though Michael Jordan has been out of the NBA for 15 years to the day that he last played in the NBA he is still a global icon. The Jumpman logo is iconic in the hoops world from teenagers who have only seen MJ with highlights to those who watch him courtside winning NBA title after title with the Chicago Bulls.
Being able to brag about being just one of eight out of 351 men’s Division I teams could help snag the Aztecs a recruit just because of the outfit.
Officially, the Jumpan logo will not be on the uniforms until the 2018-19 season, but the change will not be all that noticeable since San Diego State has been a Nike school for awhile and the design will be basically the same.
