San Diego State led the entire game
San Diego State freshmen Matt Mitchell and Jalen McDaniels combined for 30 points as the Aztecs pulled off a major 72-70 upset win over 12th-ranked Gonzaga at Viejas Arena Thursday night.
In a game San Diego State never trailed, the Aztecs derailed Gonzaga, holding the nationally-ranked Bulldogs to 42% shooting from the field, turning the ball over 16 times. Bulldogs guards Silas Melson and Josh Perkins were just 4-19 from the field with eight turnovers.
San Diego State came out hot out of the gates. The Aztecs held an 11-0 lead early, nailing two of its first three attempts from three-point range. After going just 6-28 from the perimeter in SDSU’s loss to California, the Aztecs made seven of its 23 attempts Thursday night.
Gonzaga entered the game ranked 7th in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency, but was clearly frustrated by San Diego State’s vintage defensive effort. The Bulldogs averaged 91.8 points per game prior to its awful offensive performance against San Diego State.
The Aztecs close non-conference play with an 8-3 record, including victories over Gonzaga and Georgia. San Diego State heads on the road to face Wyoming in Laramie to open Mountain West play.
