It didn’t start too well as the Aztecs went 3 and out on their first series, while UCLA scored when running back Joshua Kelley ran it in for a 5 yard touchdown on their first drive. However, things quickly changed.
San Diego State responded right back when they capped off the 75-yard, 14-play scoring when running back Chase Jasmin ran the ball in from 2 yards out with about 4:50 left in the opening quarter. After this drive, the Aztecs defense came up huge when Aztec Warrior Safety Dwayne Johnson Jr, forced a fumble and boundary warrior Safety Tariq Thompson picked it up.
At halftime, the Aztecs were up 10-7, after kicker Matt Araiza kicked a 43-yard field goal and a 10-7 lead with less than a minute left in the opening period.
To start the second half, UCLA had the ball and the Aztecs defense came up huge again when linebacker Kyahva Tezino strip sacked Bruins quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and forced a fumble and linebacker Caden McDonald recovered the ball. Only two plays later, Ryan Agnew found Wide Receiver Kobe Smith for a 34 yard touchdown to put the Aztecs up 17-7.
UCLA trimmed the Aztecs lead to 17-14 on its next drive when Thompson-Robinson, found tight end Greg Dulcich in the middle of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown. The Aztecs added two more field goals in the second half to wrap up the scoring.
Quarterback Ryan Agnew was 23-31 for 293 yards and Wide Reciever Kobe Smith caught 7 passes for 131 yards and one Touchdown. The defense was led by Boundary Warrior Safety Tayler Hawkins who had 10 tackles.
