Reaction To Officials Awarding Boise State A First Down Against Fresno State

Did the refs mess up or get it right?

What an odd way to end the game.

The recap to Boise State’s 24-17 upset win over Fresno State will be up shortly on the site, but first we have a more pressing item to discuss and that is the first down the officials awarded to the Broncos which sealed the game.

Boise State had the ball with a lead and was attempting to run the clock and ran the ball on 3rd-and-1 and got the first down. However, it was very close so the officials brought the chains out to measure it and that is when things got weird.

Here is rushing play by Alexander Mattison.

Here is how the officials quickly looked at the spot.

That is the fastest look at a first down ever and arguably could challenge the index card game in the NFL.

The call seemed extremely rushed and while the camera angle for those watching on TV was not a direct shot, but the ball seemed to be short of the first down.

Had the call gone in favor of Fresno State then Boise State would have let the clock run down and then punt the ball from the Broncos 38-yard line. Fresno State more than likely would get the ball deep in its territory and have just two or maybe three plays to go down and get a touchdown to tie the game.

Maybe they do that or maybe they don’t. The officials took that chance away. On the other side, that call did not make or break the game for the Bulldogs. There were other questionable calls in this game like allowing a Fresno State player back in play to have a large gain early in the game, there also was a no-call on a fairly obvious late hit against Marcus McMaryion.

Overall, the officials were not having a good day and that is being kind.https://twitter.com/BrandonEachus/status/1061151310697754624
