It was a long afternoon in Nashville.
Led by senior quarterback Kyle Shurmur, who threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns on 23-of-32 attempts , the Vanderbilt Commodores (2-0) pulled away from Nevada (1-1) in the second half for a convincing 41-10 victory. The Wolf Pack are now 0-5 all-time against SEC opponents.
Vanderbilt looked as though they would pull away early in the game while having no problem moving the football against Nevada’s defense. Nevada was able to cause a few turnovers however, as well as get a stop inside their own five to keep things close in the first half.
Ty Gangi threw for 216 yards and finished the first half with an impressive 10-play, 75-yard drive that was capped off by a Brendan O’Leary-Orange touchdown reception, his lone catch of the season thus far. Nevada would go into the break down 17-10 but wouldn’t score for the remainder of the game.
Nevada put up 72 points on 636 yards the previous week against FCS opponent Portland State, but they had absolutely no luck against Vanderbilt’s swarming SEC defense. They were only able to rush for a total of 34 yards on 25 attempts. Sophomore standout receiver McLane Mannix would account for 86 of Nevada’s 250 total yards on offense.
Vanderbilt scored on their first three drives of the second half and Nevada would have no response. Junior running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn finished with 93 yards including a one-play, 46 yard touchdown sprint following a Ty Gangi interception, and Kalija Lipscomb would contribute two receiving touchdowns for the Commodores, as well.
Nevada will look to bounce back as they head home next and welcome Pac-12 opponent Oregon State, while Vanderbilt will hit the road to face #8 Notre Dame.
