Wolf Pack Hold Off Beavers To Win 37-35

Reminiscent of a 2010 matchup between the Nevada Wolf Pack and the Boise State Broncos, Nevada was able to escape at home with a win due to a dramatic missed field goal that extended Oregon State’s nation-leading road losing streak to 21. Nevada let a 30-7 lead dwindle in the second half but snuck away with a 37-35 victory to collect their second win of the season in three tries.
The Beavers came into the game ranked 20th in the nation in rushing, even after facing No.5 Ohio State, and Nevada was able to hold them to just 82 yards on the ground. Oregon State relied much on the passing game and threw for 462 yards, though it still wasn’t enough.
Oregon State still seems to have a quarterback controversy on their hands. Sophomore Conor Blount started the game but would be replaced by senior Jake Luton after Blount fumbled and Nevada’s Malik Reed returned it for a 48-yard touchdown in the first half. Blount returned in the fourth quarter to finish the game and they each finished with one TD pass and one interception apiece.
Nevada senior quarterback Ty Gangi threw for 195 yards on 17-of-35 attempts including two TD passes and one interception while also contributing 61 rushing yards. Toa Taua led Nevada’s rushing attack with 81 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown. McLane Mannix once again led the receiving core with 85 yards on 5 catches and one touchdown.
Oregon State has a few wide receivers that are sure to do damage in Pac 12 play this year as senior Timmy Hernandez had 116 yards receiving and sophomore Isaiah Hodgins had 200 yards and two touchdowns.
Nevada senior wide receiver Brendan O’Leary-Orange who missed the season opener two weeks ago had three receptions for 39 yards before being taken off the field on a cart due to what looked like a head or neck injury.
Both teams will be in action next Saturday. Nevada will hope to have their star wide receiver back when they travel to Toledo (1-1) and Oregon State will head home to open conference play against Arizona (0-2).
