In the first half of this home-and-home series where Toledo was paid $375,000 from Nevada last season, the Wolf Pack fell victim to a 37-24 loss at home from an even attack of rushing and passing by the Rockets (over 200 yards each).

Luckily for Nevada (2-1), Toledo (1-1) won’t have its all-time passing leader, graduate Logan Woodside this time around. Junior quarterback Mitchell Guadagni has taken over at the helm for the Rockets this season and has put up an average of 244 yards through the air, including five TD’s and one INT through their first two meetings.

Nevada senior Quarterback Ty Gangi wasn’t able to hit the 200-yard mark passing last week and almost didn’t have enough big plays to survive Oregon State’s late offensive surge. With plenty of offensive weapons available, he should settle in and hit that mark consistently the rest of the way.

Both Nevada and Toledo have averaged 11+ minutes less than their FBS opponents in time of possession and should be a strong emphasis leading up to game time. Neither defenses have gotten much rest as of late and whoever can win that battle should walk away with a W.

THREE KEYS TO VICTORY

Nevada Wolf Pack – Coming in as an 11 point underdog, oddsmakers aren’t giving much respect to the Wolf Pack and that should ignite a flame.

  1. Get some rest. 9am start times don’t usually bode well for West-coast teams and Nevada already proved that true two weeks ago when they traveled to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt.
  2. Get the ball in the hands of Kelton Moore, Jaxson Kincaide, and Toa Taua, even if it’s through the air. Let your backfield playmakers make plays. Running the wildcat on the first drive last week worked wonders. Toledo gave up 268 yards on the ground last week. Take advantage.
  3.  Put yourself in a position to convert on third down. 8-of-28 on third down conversions the last two weeks isn’t going to cut it. Make some big plays on the ground so Toledo respects the run to open up deep opportunities. Make third downs manageable.

Toledo Rockets – Putting up some decent numbers against top-25 Miami last week should have the Rockets feeling confident.

  1. Slow the run. Nevada is going to take advantage of your problem stopping the run last week and have several talents in their backfield. Focus just on Gangi, Mannix, and O’Leary-Orange, you’re in trouble.
  2. Get the ball out quickly and into the secondary. Malik Reed is one of the most viscous defensemen in the Mountain West and will be headhunting. Nevada’s secondary was scorched for 462 yards last week but their front line held Oregon State’s No.20 rushing attack to just 82.
  3. Get Guadagni some early confidence. Short completions can go a long way for a first-year starter to get things rolling. Nevada had Oregon State’s QB’s running for their lives last week with just three and four-man rushes. Be ready.

Expect this to be a high scoring affair as both teams have allowed at least 35 points to each of their three FBS opponents while showing some solid offense. With receivers like Nevada’s McLane Mannix who has four TD’s on the season, and Toledo’s Diontae Johnson who had six catches for 119 yards and two TD’s last week, we should see some big numbers through the air.
