Portland State (8/31)- Win
The Wolf Pack open the season on a Friday against a Portland State team that went 0-11 in 2017. Nevada should easily defeat a terrible FCS team but let’s not forget the last time Nevada took on a bad FCS team at home.
@ Vanderbilt (9/8) – Loss
Nevada travels to SEC country on September 8th to face off against Vanderbilt. I like the Wolf Pack’s chances a lot in this game because I think their offense can score points against a Vanderbilt defense that appears to be not as good as previous defenses under head coach Derek Mason.
The Wolf Pack will keep it closed and competitive but I think Vanderbilt’s offense led by Kyle Shurmur will be the difference in outlasting the Wolf Pack in Nashville.
Oregon State (9/15) – Win
Nevada returns to Reno to host the Oregon State Beavers from the Pac-12 conference. The Beavers are arguably one of the worst Power 5 teams in the nation and this season they are breaking in a new coach in Jonathan Smith. The Beavers are a young team and will get a rude awakening facing off against a talented Nevada offense.
The Wolf Pack should be able to easily handle a bad Oregon State team in convincing fashion.
@ Toledo (9/22) – Loss
Last year when these two teams played, the Wolf Pack were able to hold their own for a while against Toledo before losing to the Rockets.
This year, the Wolf Pack are better on offense and should be more than able to hold their own against a Rockets team that is still talented on offense and have the secondary to put the clamps on Nevada’s Air Raid offense.
It is going to be another shootout between the Wolf Pack and Rockets but Toledo’s secondary is better equipped to stop Nevada’s passing attack and that will be the difference.
@ Air Force (9/29) – Win
The Wolf Pack have struggled on the road recently (0-6 last season and 1-13 in the last 14 road games). By the time they face Air Force in Colorado Springs, they may have already had losses to Vandy and Toledo.
But I think Nevada will break through and win a rare road game against an Air Force team that is projected to be not as good as seasons past especially on defense where the Wolf Pack can take advantage of a porous Falcons defense.
Nevada should defeat Air Force and start Mountain West conference play at 1-0.
