The 7’0″ center will be looking to sign a free agent contract.
When McCoy committed to UNLV he was projected by some as a potential lottery pick. He was gifted offensively, and had an NBA ready frame. However, after his one year at UNLV, he was exposed as a defensive liability, and his draft stock began to tumble, with most projections having him in the late second round or not even being drafted at all.
For those that predicted the later, they turned out to be correct, as McCoy went undrafted and will now look to sign a free agent contract.
This is a dissappointment, as McCoy is an incredibly talented basketball player, but traditional post players aren’t valued as high as they once were, and with McCoys defensive issues in space, he was just too much of a gamble for a team to take. This is a pretty good indicator that NBA talent evaluators believed that McCoy would have benefited from another year of college, to refine his game and increase his draft stock.
But McCoy will definitley have offers on the free agent market, and hopefully he can impress and catch on with a team that’s willing to let him develope in the G League and become a productive NBA player.
