Mountain West Standings: Five Teams Want To Avoid Opening Round Matchup

Nevada seems to have the top seed locked up

There are just a few weeks left in the Mountain West basketball season with the top and bottom placements pretty much locked in with Nevada and San Jose State, but the rest is up for grabs for seeding towards the conference tournament.

Results from this past weekend made a few things murkier when San Diego State waxed UNLV. The loss for the Rebels dropped them not just four games behind the Wolf Pack, which was out of reach regardless, but instead of being 1.5 games back from the two spot from the two seed they are now 2.5 back from Boise State. Even getting that two spot was tough since the Rebels lost both games to Boise State.

However, UNLV is now in a three-way tie with New Mexico and Wyoming for fourth-place. It is even tighter than that as Fresno State is one game above those three and at the other end, San Diego State and Utah State are 1.5 and one game back each.

To hopefully make this more clear the difference from third to eighth is just 2.5 games and that is huge because only the first five teams get a bye for the conference tournament.

There should be some separation with these games.
