Who is Ronnie Rivers?
Yes, absolutely correct.
The senior running back has been on a tear in the COVID-19 shortened season and has only played four games due to two cancellations against San Jose State and San Diego State. However, Ronnie Rivers has reached the end zone in every game, and he has two games with three or more scores. Rivers is by far the number one option on offense and is a serious candidate for Mountain West Conference Player of the Year.
The entire Bulldogs team has scored 17 touchdowns this season, and Rivers has accounted for more than half of them. If that doesn’t say team MVP then what does? The star back had himself a career day against UNLV, going crazy with 19 carries for 133 yards and three rushing scores, while adding half a dozen catches for 99 yards and another score.
The Bulldogs have two more games scheduled-assuming they don’t get canceled, so Rivers has plenty of opportunities to add to his resume and pad his stats in his impressive senior campaign.
However, there is one player that has been putting up out-of-this-world numbers every week. Who is it? Romeo Doubs, Junior wideout from the undefeated Nevada Wolfpack.
To be fair, this is most likely Rivers’ only competition aside from maybe Wolfpack QB Carson Strong and Bulldogs signal-caller Jake Haener.
Doubs has played five games in 2020, and in each game has eclipsed the century yard marks and has reached the end zone in every game. Take a look at these numbers from Doubs- in what almost feels like a Davante Adams box score: 5/133/TD, 5/172/3 TDs, 7/137/3TDs, 7/219/TD, 12/117/TD. That’s insane, it really is.
Doubs has two games of three scores and is averaging 21.6 yards per reception in 2020. He’s 11th in the country in receiving yards and 7th in the nation in receiving scores-in far fewer games than most.
It seems like the award for conference player of the year is between Doubs and Rivers, and if Rivers doesn’t play anymore for the rest of the year it will be tough. Yes, there are other candidates, but are they anywhere close to the level of these two?
The race for Player of the Year will be an interesting one, even more so because of a Nevada-Fresno State game scheduled for December 5.
